Series name: Persona 3
Canon notes: He’s from the end of Persona 3 Portable, female protagonist route, with his social link maxed (which means he lived at the end). He’s also PG from Aather, a game where everyone had amnesia and had to win their memories back. He doesn’t have all of his memories back, but he could— they’re in a jar he keeps on his person.
Species: Human!
History: Once upon a time, Shinjiro, his friend Akihiko, and Akihiko's sister, Miki, all lived in the same orphanage as children. Unfortunately for them, a tragic fire broke out and took both the orphanage and Miki from them. The guilt set Akihiko to searching for more power, and when he decided to pursue it in the form of fighting against monsters called Shadows in an organization run by the Kirijo group called SEES, Shinjiro felt it was his responsibility to protect his friend and joined alongside him. They were able to fight the Shadows by summoning a type of creature called "Persona", monsters attached to their soul and usually based off of mythological figures or archetypes.
Together with Kirijo Mitsuru, the three went on to fight against the Shadows and keep people from falling into a condition known as Apathy Syndrome. However, Shinjiro's control over his own Persona was always week at best, and one day, he lost control and ended up killing an innocent woman. The guilt drove him to leave the team, taking nasty Persona-suppressing drugs and generally living life as a hobo.
As time went on and SEES grew in size, Shinjiro continued to keep himself separated from the rest of the team, refusing Akihiko's repeated attempts to get him to rejoin. It wasn't until the son of the woman he killed (Amada Ken) joined the team that Shinjiro reluctantly returned to the group. What he didn't tell anyone was that the drugs he'd been taking were killing him, and he knew he wouldn't be around much longer. He mainly joined to tie up loose ends and help Ken get over his mom's death before he died. However, when Ken finally confronted him, he ended up getting shot twice in the chest by a rival group of Persona users that revered the Shadows. He would have died, but the watch given to him by his girlfriend and team leader protected him— he instead ended up in a coma.
Not long after he woke up from his coma, he wound up in Aather without any memories of his life. At first he was interested in gaining back his memories, but then he remembered accidentally killing someone, and stopped wanting to regain his memories. Even the teammates he was closest to (Ben from Ben Ten and Leto from Children of Dune) couldn’t talk him out of the depressive funk he fell into. The teams of Aather managed to save the world they’d fallen into and connect all worlds together, and Shinjiro had intended to go find a world to hide out on. However, another former teammate, Ayano, had asked to join him in world hopping, and he decided to travel with her and avoid going home. He had collected the remaining memories he hadn’t gained back in Aather and kept them in a jar - just in case he felt he could one day face them.
Personality: Shinjiro tends to hold himself apart from others, coming off as a gruff, grumpy bastard who doesn't have time for anyone's shit. He's more than a little antisocial, and doesn't even associate with the other so-called punks in the areas he spends most of his time. He's very much a loner, preferring to rely on himself instead of leaning on others. He's also very stubborn in his point of view, and won't change his mind for anyone or anything once he's made up his mind about what path he wants to take. As an example, as much as Akihiko wanted him to rejoin SEES, he never would have until Ken joined the group— giving him a reason to actually want to fight again, if only to make up for the sins of his past.
Guilt and self-control are primary factors in his life. It's the guilt of killing an innocent person that fuels most of his stubbornness, his steadfast need to remain in control of himself and his actions at all times. It's his guilt that leads him to being so protective of people, and it's his guilt that leads to him making decisions and reacting to things when he would otherwise remain steadfast and stubborn in his initial course of avoidance. He's a good person, but he can't see it for the mistakes he's made. But he doesn't talk about them... it isn't until Ken even shows up that he acknowledges his own guilt and steps up to try and own up to it. Until that point, he was trying to run from his past as much as he could.
Shinjiro does have a gentler side that he hides underneath all the grump and stubbornness. He has a soft spot for cute things and for people who need protecting. He cares very deeply for the people he actually does let seep into his heart, and will quietly worry more about them than he ever does about himself. He's very awkward and roundabout in showing how he cares— asking the leader if Akihiko is taking good care of himself, cooking for the team, etc. He has difficulty expressing his feelings, and is even a little afraid to— knowing that he's dying doesn't exactly want to make him form closer bonds with people who will just miss him when he's gone.
Abilities:
• Fighting
His main style of fighting involves using heavy, bludgeoning weapons or giant fuck-off battle axes…. though his joke weapon is a stop sign.
• Castor (his Persona)
This is the big skill, and many of his other ones will tie into that. Castor is not a Persona that relies heavily on magic, but has a lot of powers that are meant for hitting things, and hitting them hard. Any magical skill he has is more for personal buffs than any real threat against others. A lot of the abilities his Persona uses require him to use his own HP to fuel them, so with the power cap, he would likely only be able to pull off any given ability once or twice before he has to stop or drop.
Before he can ever use his Persona, however, he would need to get a gun-like device known as an “Evoker” so he can summon it to the forefront… while it is possible to summon one without an Evoker, given his poor control, that isn’t the wisest course to take.
• Cooking
Shinjiro is a really good cook! Give him the right materials, and he can make the tastiest several-course meals.
